Good Lord, Are Capcom Actually Learning From Their Mistakes?

It’s been four years since I last put anything together for this site. A full time job outside of videogames will do that. A lot’s changed in four years – America elected a dickhead, Australia elected a coward before the coward’s party dumped him for a different dickhead, and everyone hid in their homes for six months to avoid the plague. And a whole lot more. We had arguably the greatest three months in videogames ever. We’ve had new entries in almost every major fighting game franchise that have blown people away. And, strike me down, Capcom are on the mend.

SFV Getting A Heap Of New Stuff Soon – Evo 2016 Panel

Evolution is upon us, with pools play currently underway in Las Vegas. During all this is a two-day schedule of panels conducted by fighting games developers, keen to let slip what the future holds for the games being played in the next hall over.

This morning it was Capcom’s turn to show us what’s coming to Street Fighter V in the near future. Here’s what they had to offer.

July Update To Bring SFV Back?

With Community Effort Orlando in the bag for 2016, viewers were sent home with a special gift from Capcom: two new characters for Street Fighter V and the long-promised Story mode, all available this Friday. And literally in the space of that two minute trailer, the fighting games scene went from caustically pessimistic about the game’s chances to unbridled jubilance. Just listen to that crowd, will you?

Capcom Pro Tour 2016 Announced

This afternoon Capcom announced the schedule for the upcoming Capcom Pro Tour, culminating in the Capcom Cup Finals in December.

With a successful season last year, Capcom’s Peter Rosas commented on how tough it was to bring changes, aside from the big shift away from Ultra Street Fighter 4, to the new Street Fighter V, set for release next week.

The Capcom Pro Tour is a series of events throughout the year that serves as qualifier events for the Capcom Cup Finals, a 32-man tournament with a prize pool of $500,000.

This year Capcom intends to introduce a two-tier ranking system, covering both regional and global competition. Top-ranking entrants from four regions, North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia, will qualify for the Capcom Cup Finals, along with twelve Premier Event winners from prestigious FGC events around the world.

Capcom Pro Tour 2016 kicks off in March 18 with Final Round in Atlanta, USA. Australia will get its taste of the CPT action with two ranking events for the first time ever: Battle Arena Melbourne on May 13, ahead of the OzHadou Nationals in Sydney in late August. Both of these ranking events will send winners to the Capcom Pro Tour Asia finals, held later this year in South Korea, as well as dole out ranking points for placing competitors.

The Definition Of Insanity: Capcom’s Non-SFV Fighters

Some bad guy in some old game once defined insanity as ‘doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again expecting shit to change’. For the team at Capcom, however, it looks like they’re expecting a different result from their same old reluctance to bank on their non-Street Fighter fighting franchises, despite the runaway success of Street Fighter doyen Yoshinori Ono’s labour of love. Word is starting to spread of a new patch on the Street Fighter V beta for PlayStation 4 users. Patch notes claim that it’s for an “overall renew for next beta test”. Before the beta program started Capcom promised three seperate beta periods for a lucky few to test the game, and so far they’ve delivered four. If a new beta really is on the cards before the game’s release in four weeks’ time, it would be number five.

There’s no word as to whether this beta will also be open to Steam users, or what other features will be made available, but the update is 3GB and it’s available now on your PS4. So yeah, get to it.

Capcom Cup 2015 Results, More Street Fighter News

Yesterday was Street Fighter Day at PlayStation Experience, with the annual Capcom Pro Tour drawing to a close with the 2015 Capcom Cup.

A fitting send-off for Street Fighter IV as a marquee game, Japanese player Kazunoko toppled Street Fighter legend Daigo Umehara in a close fought final. After having sent Umehara into the losers’ bracket in straight games, Daigo fought his way back to make the final, before capitulating to Kazunoko 3-2 in the decider. Full results, and more Street Fighter V developments saved for after Capcom Cup, are available after the jump.
